A Brief History of Manila Xiamen International School
The Manila Xiamen Educational Foundation, a duly registered non-stock, non-profit foundation in the Philippines, conceptualized the Manila Xiamen International School (MXIS) in 1993. It was then in cooperation with the Xiamen University. The school was granted a permit to operate in Xiamen by the Xiamen Education Committee and the Philippine Education Department. It offers basic education from Pre-school to High School for dependents of expatriate and overseas families, and to the local Chinese.
In 1999, when the cooperative venture with the Xiamen University ended, MXIS secured a permit from the Ministry of Education in Beijing to operate as an independent, foreign-owned international school. The school transferred to a new site, along the seaside area of Xiamen City. On October 20, 1999, a super typhoon devastated the city, destroying the school’s basketball court and the elementary building. Realizing the risk of its location, the MXIS management decided to transfer to another place. In May 2003, it signed a 20-year contract for the new campus, with three buildings and two swimming pools. The land area is four times bigger than the other two sites. Immediately, the management commissioned the construction of a multi-purpose court, a ten-room Pre-school building, a mini-golf course, a two-story castle inspired play area, and tw0 swimming pools in addition to the three existing buildings.
Since its inception, Manila Xiamen International School’s population has increased tenfold. With just five nationalities at the beginning, this number has increased to over twenty at the close of the school year 2004-2005. The students came from China, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Singapore, Belgium, Syria, India, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Indonesia, Malaysia, Denmark, Mexico, and Thailand.
MXIS has graduated seventy-nine students in a span of ten years; over ninety percent of them have enrolled in a 4- to 5-year college courses. Their destinations include the United States, Australia, the Philippines, China, Indonesia, Korea, Great Britain, Canada, Hong Kong, Germany, Taiwan, and Singapore.
